Libya  (1,759,540 sq km) is a major oil producer but is largely unexplored with regard to mineral resources. Its mining sector is currently restricted to production of salt, gypsum and raw material for local construction, glass and cement industries.  The modest mineral explorations efforts so far resulted in discovery of potential iron and uranium ores and indications for gold and other metals. However, the basic geology of southern Libya in particular encourages further serious exploration for many ore types.

After over 15 years period of international isolation and sanctions, Libya has recently inaugurated a new economical  course aiming at attracting potential foreign investors in the Libyan economy, including the mining sector.
